After raising and selling birds for a over a decade now. I have met so many wonderful people who share my same love for birds. It's been so rewarding to help people find their new companion and get them started on the right track. Ordering birds over the Internet can be a bit scary, so I am hoping that some of these comments will help calm your fears.
There is some valuable and excellent information on various species characteristics and behaviors stated below! I totally recommend reading them.

Hi Darlene,
Just to let you know, she ate really well and drank lots of water. I don't know if she ate on the way, but she made up for it tonight. She's not too sure about the cage, but I'll keep her in the cage by my bed tonight. She's really tired, sleeping on Terry right now, but we'll put her to bed soon. What a sweetheart she is. You have done a great job with her! Lots of cuddles and kisses. A very gentle bird. Hope you are not missing her too much.

Hi Darlene,
Charlie and Maia have come a long way in learning to live together. He has been preening her tail and wings a little and tonight did her whole head which I missed because I was out at a meeting. Anyway, I won't go on and on, but she is a very good girl and just a delight to have around. She is very bonded to me, (which I suspect comes from being bonded to you), but loves the boys too. In fact, she doesn't like anyone to leave the room and calls her "whup, whup call" until they come back or answer her. Very smart little girl she is.
Darlene does a beautiful job with her babies.
Take care, get some rest, Julie in British Columbia
DUSKY-HEADED CONURES
From: Joan Der To: Darlene Johnson Sent: Tuesday, January 23, 2007 3:04 PM Subject: Testimony for My Baby
My name is Joan Der and I am from London, ON. I would like to share with you all about my wonderful experience.
At the time we decided on getting a little conure, we started looking thru different pet stores that has birds. My Mom, suggested after the big day out, that maybe we need to look on the internet for breeders, since we didn’t know any breeders in the city. We found such a wonderful informative site that belonged to Darlene. Wow!!! I cannot believe the amount of information. I will never forget the first call I made. I spoke with her about the different birds she bred. When I finally told her about my family lifestyle, she suggested that the Dusky Conure sounds like something that will fit in the family perfectly. Wow, is Darlene ever right!
I met her and she gave me this little baby that just perched the day before. I held the baby and wow… he is everything I dreamt it would be like. Darlene took her time to talk amd answer all my questions. By the time that I was leaving, (LOL … 3 hours later) I was ready to make a choice. It was still the little one she gave me to hold for the first time. He touched me so much, that I wanted to have him in my family.
The time waiting was incredible. My children asked me continuously when the little baby will come home. A few months later, when I called her to see if I can visit my baby… she surprised me by telling me that my baby can come home! I brought him home and he lit up my home. He was not shy, nor scared. He ate that night and slept great and was ready for the next day. He played with us and talked to us like we have always been together. Each day, he would be sure to greet you with a morning, afternoon and evening chirp. He just loves to be cuddled and played with. He was so well natured that he even loves to see my other pets and chirp at them. He brings so much joy to my family and I.
When anyone asked my why I chose a Dusky Conure, I know what to show them. Words cannot even describe all the things that he made my family feel. They just need to experience it for themselves. They will know what I mean.
Thanks again Darlene. Joan in London, Ontario

Hi Darlene: Cosmo is doing very well. His adjustment has been easy. I know that is because of all the love and care he got from you. It seem it was forever when I first saw him till he was ready to come home. But it was worth the wait. He is happy and very out going. He acts a little shy, then he is all over you. He is a eating machine! Forget about dishes on the bottom. He is eating and drinking from the dishes on the side. He wants out and is exploring and loves to climb. This happy baby has had a lot of love and guidance in his first few months of life and you can really appreciate that. Darlene you have done a great job with this little conure. Everyone who is lucky to get one of your darlings, are very lucky they get such a wonderful baby to share their lives with. When you want a birdy baby to enrich your life, please email Darlene . I am glad I did and Cosmo the dusky conure is one special little darling!
Thanks Darlene, what a treasure we have, thanks to your love of these special creatures. Thank you for such a happy beautiful baby, he is just so cute and perfect! He really is a sweetheart!

I've enjoyed every minute with her since the second i got her and am sending this email as an update/ thank you for bringing her in to this world and sharing her with me. She is becoming more and more of a sweet heart as the days go on, but only with me. On occasion she will warm up to my mom but not if i'm around :P Definately a one man bird! She enjoys sitting in my shirt and adventuring with me, whether it's at the computer, watching tv, eating, even doing my homework Abby can't get enough and neither can I. Thank you so much again for doing what you do and sharing that with the world.

We adopted Taz last July, from friends who thought that we could give Taz the attention that she deserves. My husband and I adore her and she is our little sweetheart. She is very sociable and all of our friends enjoy her company. She is always so happy to see anybody, including seeing people that she's never met before. All of our friends comment that she never plays strange with anyone, and is always so willing to step on to a hand even though she is meeting the person for the first time. From: Dan and Christina To: littledarlings@.... Sent: Monday, July 26, 2004 3:54 PM Subject: So happy with Whisper!
Hi, Darlene! Whisper is doing marvelously! He is so playful and cheerful. He is pretty much finished molting, so he is not as grumpy. Danny and I include him in as much of our lives as possible. He comes with me into the bedroom and bathroom when I'm getting ready, plays on the floor while we play Sony Playstation (he likes to climb up our legs and run around our bodies, ultimately distracting one of us and the other one gets to win the game!), and even goes for short excursions outside with us. He is learning how to talk more and more (or maybe we are just learning how to understand his gravelly mumbling!) He says "hello" to us, "pretty boy" and last night he was calling "hello, Henry?" Must be missing your Pionus. Whisper is learning some new words. He's mumbling a whole lot, just practising, so we can't make out what he's saying. He has learned "what now!" I don't know where he picked that up, he just said it one day while he was on my shoulder. I figured out what Whisper has been mumbling lately. When he's puttering around his cage looking for something to play with, he says "Whisper, whisper!" It's so cute! We've been working on new words, can't wait to hear what else he's picking up on! What a smart baby! :)
Anyway, Danny and I are both thrilled with him! We can spend hours just watching his antics on his playpen (he never seems to sit still unless he's soaked from a bath) or playing with him. Danny is getting more confident handling him, and now (to my surprise) often takes the initiative to pick up Whisper and play with him!
Danny has fallen so much in love with Whisper and I love Whisper so much!
Thanks again for everything, Darlene! Whisper is everything I was hoping for and so much more!
Sincerely, Christina in Alberta ;)

Good day Darlene.
My little Green Cheeked Conure is adjusting well to his new surroundings since taking him home yesterday. He just began eating and drinking today around 4 pm and boy was he hungry!
The bird just loves to nestle between my chin, neck and shoulder, while in this position he firmly rests flat his entire body against me. As I stroke his head and back, it continues affectionate chirps from him and especially from me! :) The funny thing is when I have him on my finger to go back into his cage afterwards, he runs up my arm to cuddle again.
I couldn't have dreamt of a better bird which seems to have bonded very well even after a day with him. I have not yet named it, no doubt it will take some time to think of a suitable one.
One thing I have noticed that others have commented on is the unique smell they carry, which I find is actually very pleasant.
Lastly, I knew from the very moment I walked into the aviary with you and seeing all the birds wanting all your affection, I was sold.
Thank you for raising such a wonderful bird, you are truly a loving person that gives 110% back to your birds.
Gratefully, Phillip Pagel in Ontario

Hi there,
We named the baby Kiki and she is the most amazing little bird. I love her so much.
She drank water yesterday and ate a few pellets after falling in her bowl. She likes her cage but would much rather be snuggling me, lol. I took her out after eating because she ran back and forth across the door. She hopped right on my hand. Um, how do you get the little ones to go back in, lol. She was not happy when I put her back in. She ran back and forth across the door and chewed at the door, lol.
She has made a few noises, kind of like a throaty caaaw. She ate some applesauce last night too. She is so sweet and curious. My husband fell in love with her!!! He said he has never seen a bird just melt into you like that. He is definitely smitten!!!
Well, all is wonderful and I am completely in love. Thank-you so much for raising such a gorgeous, sweet, loveable bird.
Sincerely, Crissie Minten in Ontario

Hello there! Everyone here is great and Kiki is thriving. She did well with our week away from home. She is such a sweet little thing. She loves to give kisses and snuggles. She also enjoys her baths under running water. She is eating very well but so far hasn't dug into greens well. We're trying dandelion and spinach right now. She loves sweet potato with applesauce and veggies. I have given her no seed and don't plan to.
The funny thing is she loves me and lets me snuggle with her and will snuggle in and fall asleep on me but the second my husband walks in the door she flies off me to get him. Quite comical!!!! He is so ticklish too, lol.
She loves to say good morning to everyone, too. She comes to each person in the family to say hi. She has bitten a few times ( mostly to my son ) but usually it's when she's getting tired and she also lets out a squeal first to warn us. She hasn't played on her playstand yet. We keep encouraging her but she prefers to be on us if she's out of her cage. We're working on potty training and she is doing very well. I found from the first day we brought her home she didn't really like to poop on us. She still does poop on us but not very often.
Kiki is the most adorable sweetie but stubborn, lol. I wouldn't pick another bird if I had a choice.
Sincerely, Crissie Minten in Ontario

It has been a while since I emailed to you. I just thought you might like to see Magnolia. She is a cuddly little bird and loves my boys. She loves to be out her cage and with me. If she can't find me she looks for me. Her favorite game is to throw a ball off the cage. She may be saying Maggie. She loves junk food so I have to watch what she eats, she loves it all. Hi Darlene,
We're sure enjoying our little feathered baby. I think she's doing well: she plays with all kinds of toys ( especially anything she thinks we might not want her to play with ), she has a bath each morning and eats breakfast with us ( making sure that all members of the flock are at the table ). She sleeps in her happy hut and makes the strangest little squeaks and quacks when settling in for the night.
Anyway, thanks again. What a beautiful bird. Randy Schroeder in Alberta

Wow! I'm not sure how many weeks it's been now since you bestowed upon us our wonderful new addition, but I thought I'd just give you an update since we haven't spoken in a while.
Oh, we named him Belew, after Adrien Belew ( Of King Crimson fame ) who is one of our favourite musicians who just happens to have written a song called Birds since he loves birds so much too. We liked the name also cause it just rolls of the tongue and sounds nice.
Now he loves to be on us, we can cuddle and kiss him and pet him all over! He'll fall asleep on his back in our hands! He mimics many, many sounds - we can only really identify a couple of them as cupboard door creaking and maybe the phone. Plus he says "step up" and "pretty bird" and some other stuff we can't understand yet.
Belew loves his daily showers in the tap in the kitchen and has become quite comfortable meeting new people and letting them get to know him. He's probably met by now like about a dozen people or so besides us. Not all at once of course! Ha ha ha !
Anyway, he's doing just fine, we love him very very much and he seems to be genuinely affectionate towards us too.
Hope you're doing well, I often wonder how the other little Green cheeked conure's doing - can't remember that girl's name now... I hope she's as happy as we are with her little dude - or dudette! ( Speaking about KIKI - Crissie Minten's bird )!

Subject: Update on Ringo - Painted Conure (hatched June 28 03)
Hello Darlene, As Ringo nears his 5 month birthday, I wanted you to know how things are progressing.
He is a fantastic little bird. He is a bundle of fun and captures the hear of everyone that he meets. Very affectionate and good with all 4 of my kids, the dog and other 3 birds. I use the term he instead of it... I don't know what (s)he is. He is chirping out word like sounds, " nite nite, love you, kisses, morning, what, good bird, pretty bird" and is working on the wolf whistle. I am the only one who understands him of course!!! ;) He likes to ride on my head particularly when it is up in a barrette... he perches in and on the barrette. He loves to hide inside my stepdaughters ponytail. She has very thick and long hair. He eats everything we give him... mango is one of his very favourites. He does that funny thing with his pellets still and I noticed he tries to "soften" his green beans.. He hangs by one foot from the top of his cage when he wants my attention and climbs up his ladder when out of his cage... the good stuff is in his food dish up there (seeds). I sometimes surprise him though - no seeds - just more pellets... don't want him getting chubby. He loves to shower with me but prefers to bath in his fresh water... considering he is bigger than the dish this is rather amusing. If you are sitting too close to his cage while he bathes... you get VERY wet!!! He is a joy in the house and anyone who visits fall in love with him too. He goes to anyone, he isn't shy. He will lay on his back in my hand while I sing rockabye Ringo to him.... if I scratch his head and neck he often drifts off to sleep there. Thanks for him, Darlene, you did a great job!!!

Hello Darlene: My Little Darlings name is Reese. Thank you Darlene, I am so pleased that she came into my life .
She is so so sweet. She is quite the snuggler. She doesn't go in my sweater to snuggle, but leans against my neck and tucks her head into my cheek. Shes so sweet. I actually cried the first time she fell asleep on me.
I call her my cutie pie. She loves to be preened on the top and under the chin and by the cheeks. She was a bit apprehensive at first about me going under her wings, but now we are quite content with an under the wing tickle or rub. She loves her happy hut and sleeps in it everynight. She loves her rope swing. I just adore her. She has quite the tongue on her as well. She just loves to stick it out and rub all over me. It feels really neat. Thanks for letting me BRAG .. I just love her. I have to say .. she sure is a little darling Darlene. I love her.

Hi Aisha, when are you getting your baby RC? You are truly going to enjoy him. Sunshine, my RC is such a delight. When Darlene talk about Fezz having a healthy curiosity, watch it, it means: Your baby will be busy non-stop playing with anything in site :-) Sunshine is particularly curious about other birds, big or small, which is a safety issue as she is not too big herself. She loves to play with them and even though she plays with other birds all day long, she remains very tame, cuddly and would not go without her humans. I especially like this species, because they are so cuddly, yet spend a lot of time just playing with their own toys. Sunshine is quite mischievious though and require close supervision as nothing scares her and will get into trouble bringing her play flock with her into it, as she is quite the leader.

Esmerelda is my PERFECT bird! She's quiet but that's not to say that she doesn't vocalize. She started speaking when she was about 8 months old and the things she says are in context which suggests to me some level of intelligence. She is cuddly but notclingy. She loves to snuggle with her back against my face or just sit on my shoulder and get skritched. She kisses me, preens me, even wrestles with me. At other times she prefers to do her own thing. As for her activity level, she sure isn't a perch sitter! She is always busy doing something be it climbing, chewing, playing with toys, or talking to her 'mirror baby'. She is SUCH a clown - lately she's taken to swinging by one leg, upside-down. I keep her play area well-stocked with things to keep her occupied (many just simple, cheap, homemade toys) so there is lots to keep her active, occupied and mentally-stimulated.

Hi Darlene: This is Glenda, owner of our Rose Crowned Conure, Rosie! I just LOVE her to pieces. She's such a good bird, and LOVES to play. Rosie is a real doll, and soooooo SMART! She's just unreal. We have a tent made on top of her cage, and she plays inside it for hours, lies on her back, and plays with the ball, and runs and hides when I tell her a spider is coming. She jumps up and down, soooo funny. When she hears Bruce's truck coming from work, she gets off her perch and waits by the door. She loves Bruce a lot. She chases Bruce down the hall when he disappears.
She now makes a loud kissing noise, and says, "I love you, What's ya doin?, Baby, baby baby, Stop it!, Baby want bath, Peek a Boo, Want some, Many types of whistles. She tells us to be quiet, and she goes ssssshhhhhhhh, be quiet, so funny!
I have her in one spot, with the plastic on the floor, and she does her business. I even trained her not to poop on us, and believe it or not, when she's on our shoulder, she lets us know. No one believes me until they see her do it. I just LOVE her to pieces. She takes a bath under the tap, and says, 'baby want a bath', when she sees me at the sink.
She eats EVERYTHING under the sun, and is sooooo spoiled.
She is absolutely adorable! Love, Glenda, Bruce and Rosie in Ontario

The other day she let me flip her onto her back, she wrapped her claws around my finger and swung upside down. She lets me scratch her belly and even lifts up her wings so I can scratch her under her wings. I took Kaya to the Vet, he said she was wonderful. Couldn't believe how gentle she is and said that physically she was looking great. Kaya didn't flinch when he held her and ran his thumbs down her breast bone and checked her out. He didn't wear gloves and only used a towel to hold onto her while he trimmed her wings. Thanks Darlene and Kevin. Keep up the wonderful work!

In the two and a half months we've had her now, she has never bitten either one of us. Even when she is startled and happens to be sitting anywhere on us, she doesn't bite, just flies to the ground and then looks up at you to pick her back up! {:-) She also steps up to anyone who asks her and all my friends and family who have met her think she is the sweetest bird they've ever met! And it is good to know she prefers men in general not just Kel. My sister-in-law isn't impressed that Kaya likes my brother better than her! LOL! I just wanted to tell you about our little Sunshine. She is becoming soooo cuddly, I started to call her my little green cockatoo. She is simply adorable.. I can't stop thinking that I could have missed all this, if I would have listened to some people. ONE person I had asked her opinion on the Rose-Crowned had said that, yes, she had seen some and frankly, she didn't see what the fuss was all about. Nothing special there, she said. Sunshine is nothing, but special! She has this little voice that is really not irritating, she is smart, playful, funny, affectionate and just loves to cuddle. When I'm on the computer, I will wrap her in my hand and whisper to her against my face. She closes her eyes, and lets herself being scritched, letting this little baby noise out. Sunshine is truly a joy.

Hi Darlene!
Just an update on Rosie....you would not believe...or maybe you would....Rosie is the most darling - (no pun intended), affectionate, cuddliest little bird I could ever have imagined having joined our lives! She is now coming on seven months old on the 25th of January and her personality is blooming! She just loooovvves sitting on my shoulder when I'm vacuuming the house, on the computer, or just generally most of the time that she is out of her cage. She loves her new play gym that she got for Christmas and guess what!!! She's starting to TALK already - before her six month birthday she said "hi" and says it as clear as a bell. She also says "step up" as soon as I walk into the room where her cage is, and it is sounding clearer all the time (that was at six months of age). She tries to say "hello" but it's not as clear yet. Then the rest of the time she is garbling some foreign language like when I cover her cage up with her towel, as though she is cursing me out!
She loves to have her head scratched and if my hand stops moving, she moves her head in and leans her little rosy cheek on my finger or rests her chin on my thumb - acts more like a dog or a cat than a bird! She lets us hold her on her back in our hands and just stares adoringly into the eyes/face of the one that is holding her while we talk to her as though she is absorbing everything you say and storing it away in her head for later use.
Everyone in the family adores her as much as I do. She would prefer to be on one of her "flock" rather than jump off to the ground and only does so to poop, but then wants rig
