Origin: This species inhabits the sub-tropical zone of the mountainous regions of western Venezula, in the Andes.  Mainly in the state of Merida, Tachira,  northern Barinas,  Lara and northern Trujillo.

Habitat: In forests, forest edges and in partially wooded areas. Sometimes seen in flocks of 20 - 30 birds. This species prefers treetops and will forage in lower vegetation near the ground. Noisy when flying, but a quieter species of pyrrhura.

Captivity: This species can be kept in either a large aviary or a very roomy cage. They are a very prolific species. They can easily double clutch and even triple clutch in a breeding season. The nest box can be 12" x 12" x 24" horizontal with the entrance being about 3.5" in diameter. The hen can lay from 5 - 7 eggs with the average being 6 eggs. Incubation time is 23 days. After 7 weeks the young leave the nest and will be taken care of by the male.

Pet Potential: Fairly quiet voice and seldom uses it.

Super, super friendly birds and make a fantastic and wonderful pet for the beginner or experienced pet owner. Wonderful with children! Very gentle. Cuddly and affectionate.
