Characteristics of the Maximilian Pionus
~ Pionus maximiliani

Length: About 29 cm ( 11.5 " )
Weight: Anywhere between 230 grams to 250 grams

Adults: The feathers of the head are green edged with a pale grey. The forehead and lores are blackish. The cheeks are green with narrow bluish tips. The chin, throat and upper breast have purplish blue feathers. The majority of the body is green. The mantle and upper wing coverts are bronze - olive with the bronze on the shoulders having a higher definition. The primary flight feathers secondary flight feathers and the middle tail feathers are olive green with a slight bronze tinge to them. The under tail coverts are red with the outer webs being blue. The bill is blackish with horn coloured ends and a horn coloured stripe down the front center. The periophthalmic ring of skin is white and the sides being grey. The iris is a dark brown and the feet grey.
Young:  May or may not have a broken red frontal band which is lost at the first moult. They may or may not have a poorly developed purplish blue band to the throat and upper breast.

Subspecies:  There are 3 recognized suspecies. One is Pionus maximiliani melanoblepharus  - Ribeiro's Scaly - headed Parrot

They are a larger bird of 30 cm ( 12" ) and heavier up to 310 grams. The colour is a darker green on the lower breast, abdomen and back. The upper breast band is larger and a darker blue. The bill is mostly horn coloured.

They range from central Brazil, southwards to eastern Paraguay and to Misiones and Corrientes in northeastern Argentina.

Pionus maximiliani siy  - Siy Parrot

A larger bird of 30 cm ( 12" ) and weight up to 310 grams. The shade of green on the body is more of a olive green, with a strong bronze tinge to the lower breast, abdomen, back and flight feathers. The chin and breast band has a reddish purple tinge to it. The bill is mostly black with yellow tips.

They range from Mato Gross, Brazil, central and eastern Bolivia, Paraguay and northern Argentina in the provinces of Formosa and Chaco.

Pionus maximiliani lacerus -  Tucuman Parrot

A larger bird of 30 cm ( 12" ) with weight up to 310 grams. The shade of green on the body is green, with a fainter bronze coloured tinge. The breast band is more extensive, with a bluish, reddish purple.

They range from the provinces of Salta and Tucuman and in northwestern Argentina.
Origin: They are found over a large area of eastern South American from eastern and northeastern Brazil southwrds through Bolivia and Paraguay to northern Argentina.

Habitat: They are found in pairs, small groups or flocks of up to 50 birds in light forest, open woodlands and some cleared areas, outside of the breeding season. noisy when flying to and from their roosting areas. They are quiet while foraging.
Captivity:  They are a very peaceful, quiet and calm species, even towards other species of birds. They are not voracious chewers, unless of course during breeding season. Captive bred pionus will breed any month of the year. Sexual maturity around 2.5 years of ages. Recommended breeding is after 3 years of age. Breeding is not difficult. Can be bred in a very large cage or flight, indoors or outdoors. The nestbox can be made from wood or metal, with the size being 12" x 12" x 18''  with the entrance diameter of 4 inches. The female can lay anywhere between 3 to 5 eggs, with the incubation time of 26 days. The fledging period is around 51 to 60 days. They can double clutch a season.
