Characteristics of the Weddell's (Dusky-headed) Conure
- Aratinga weddellii
Length: 28 cm ( 11 inches )
Weight: anywhere between 90 - 100 grams
Young: The head colour is slightly duller, less of a blue wash. Cere is white. Iris is brown. The sides of the upper mandible pink, turning black.
Adults: A medium green bird, yellowish green on the abdomen and olive green on the mantle. The crown is greyish-brown with the individual feathers edged in blue, giving an appearance that the head is covered in a blue wash and the nape is blue. The feathers of the sides of the neck, throat and upper breast are bluish green. The outer flight feathers are black edged in blue. The upper tail feathers are blue with a green base, underside blackish. Eyes are pale yellowish grey with a very wide periophthalmic white eye ring. The beak is black and the legs are a dark grey. Cere is pale pinkish-grey.
Origin: This species inhabits north-eastern Bolivia, north-western Brazil, eastern Ecuador, eastern Peru, South-eastern Colombia.
Habitat: A lowland species. Common in the rainforest along the edges of rivers, forest remnants; secondary vegetation and isolated woodlands with cleared areas.

Captivity: This species can be kept in either a large aviary or a very roomy cage. They are a very prolific species. They can easily double clutch and even triple clutch in a breeding season. Recommended to only allow two clutches per season. No fixed breeding season, can be anytime in the year. The nestbox can be 10" x 10" x 24" with the entrance being about 2.5" in diameter. The hen can lay from 2 - 5 eggs with the average being 3 - 4 eggs. Incubation time is 23 - 25 days. After 8 - 9 weeks, the young leave the nest and will be taken care of by the male.
Relatively quiet, vocal mostly when excited. A calm, gentle and sweet species. Great with children. They easily bond with their owners. Enjoys chewing, playing, bathing, doing tricks and cuddling with its owners. Affectionate, clever and comical. Can entertain itself.
Life expectancy: 30 years
